One of the greatest tools for creating explosive speed, strength and power on the ice, flield, or court comes with training heavy, compound movements. At Sports Specific Training, we know that athletes need to develop functional strength and mobility that will enhance their game to new levels.
Sports Specific Training's new summer program “ Functional Training for Sport ” combines strongman techniques to increase lean body mass, decrease fat mass, and add explosiveness and power to your game- whether its football, hockey, lacrosse, basketball or any other sport. Functional Training for Sport will challenge you beyond your wildest dreams. Our program consists of unique and powerful exercises that will transfer to game time power, speed and explosiveness. We focus on building a foundation- training the body as a whole, instead of targeting specific muscles for isolation.
FTS is SST's most popular and most unconventional program. Athletes of all types are put through a strenuous workout consisting of:

Here's just a sample of some of the exercises that the certified coaches at S.S.T. will put you through during our Functional Training for Sport.
Tire Flipping:
What better way to develop overall body strength and power than to flip an oversized industrial tire!! By incorporating this unique strongman exercise into your training regime, you'll develop a stronger back, powerful legs and overall upper body strength as you lift and flip.
Farmers Walking:
Nothing better for developing a bone breaker grip than to grab a hold of weighted implements and walk for set distances or time. You'll have a new appreciation for Newton 's Laws of Gravity as the load takes its toll on your body- your traps will be exploding and your forearms will be screaming!!
Sandbag Carrying:
Sandbag training is a unique lift that uses odd and unbalanced lifting to bring up weak and lagging bodyparts in no time. Rotational core work, overhead lifting, dragging- the sandbag allows you to do it all!
Car Pushing:
The car push is an exhilarating multi-joint exercise that will fire up every muscle group from the calves to the fingertips. This simple by nature exercise will target the entire body and exhaust you more than you can ever imagine!!
Sled Pulling:
One of the greatest tools that we use in our Functional Training for Sport programs is the power sled- a device that allows athletes to run, shuffle, and perform various exercises with variable resistance accommodating the athlete's strength levels. Backwards and forwards sled pulls, side shuffles, crossovers and bear crawls are excellent exercises that will help the athlete increase overall lower body strength, power, and speed- something every athlete strives to increase!
